The 7x57 was introduced by Mauser in 1892. It was originally a military cartridge that rapidly became popular as a hunting cartridge. The renowned professional hunter "Karamojo" Bell used it to kill a large number of elephants, presumably under ideal conditions. Nevertheless, by today`s standards it is neither a big-game cartridge nor one for large, heavy game. The cartridge is suitable for use on medium-sized game up to lighter red deer and wild boar, at distances up to about 200 meters. It is also very popular for roe deer, as it does not cause much damage to the venison. And, furthermore, it is a very pleasant cartridge to shoot in light rifles.
